We Have Entered Summer Sports Limbo

By Garrett Pelto

I have some unfortunate news for major sport fans: We have just entered sports limbo.

The long NHL season has wrapped up with the Washington Capitals winning their first Stanley Cup 3-1 over first-year expansion team, Vegas Golden Knights. The highlight of that series being the fan girl who flashed the Caps during their celebration.

The Golden State Warriors swept LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers, winning back-to-back NBA championships. The highlight of that series being Game 1 and mainly J.R. Smith‘s bonehead last play. Some referring to as “The Dribble”, adding to the history of Cleveland’s sports woes.

Both championship series coming and going like they never happened.

In addition to the NBA and NHL seasons ending, we just witness Justified win the Triple Crown, the second horse to do so in three years.

So now we entered limbo: where only baseball web gems exist. For sports fans like myself, summer baseball is not enough in the wait for the NFL season.

In recent years, this is where this writer has found love for the UFC.

Last weekend, we experienced one of the most entertaining fights UFC has had to offer in a while with UFC 225: Robert Whittaker vs. Yoel Romero (which this writer predicted all main card victors, if I toot my own horn).

So with around 85 days until the NFL season, here are some things to look forward to while SportsCenter talks about LeBron and unnecessary sports news:

UFC:

  • June 12: Dana White’s Tuesday Contender Series: Week one featuring ex-Cowboy Greg Hardy
  • June 23: UFC Fight Night: Donald Cerrone vs. Leon Edwards

  • July 14: UFC Fight Night: Junior Dos Santos vs. Blagoy Ivanov
  • July 22: UFC Fight Night: Volkan Oezdemir vs. Mauricio Rua
  • July 28: UFC Fight Night: Eddie Alvarez vs. Dustin Poirier
  • August 4: UFC 227: T.J. Dillashaw vs. Cody Garbrandt 2

Baseball:

  • June 29-July 1: Yankees/Red Sox series (If you are into baseball rivalries)
  • July 13-17: All-Star Week
  • July 17: 89th All-Star Game at Nationals Park

Basketball:

  • June 21: NBA Draft
  • June 25: NBA Award Show

Hockey:

Football (Kind of):
